More. Faster. Now. Better.
Think about it: We are all over-communicated with. Statistically, each and every day we each are exposed to over 20,000 bits of advertising messages; mail, TV, radio, web banners, cell phone, direct mail, billboards…. More. Faster. Now. Better.
Think about it: Nobody reads anymore! We are living in the TiVo society. The RSS Feed Me That culture. The USA Today SkimArama run. The Junk Mail Filterers Anonymous syndrome. The Twitterific Only So Many Letters Permitted intervention. More. Faster. Now. Better.
Yet…there is evidence of a Re-humanization Movement happening all around us: Small home churches. Coffee shop gatherings, just to talk. Increase in people working with personal coaches and counselors. Dinner at home. Less. Slower. Naturally. Better.
Cannot help but remember Harry Chapin’s classic song, Cat’s in the Cradle, a somberly accurate representation of how well we are evolving in our interpersonal moments of ( ):
Cat’s in the Cradle
“My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then….”
The song goes on to convey how the son grows up, and when the Dad wants to spend time with him and his family the son now is too busy with all the “things” that have filled up his life:
“…I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me.
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then.”
Same story. Same life. Same narrative.
The point:
There is a narrative written for life. It was written for all of us and each of us before time began. And we each have a role in that story. Some of us are a letter, some a word. A phrase. A sentence. A book. Books. A punctuation: ( ).
None are more important or more valuable than the others. So, what value is there to speed-reading through the moments we are given. To experience the rich ink of our individual and collective stories. More? Faster? Now? Better?
Ever experienced a moment like this: You are driving with someone down the highway, and off to the left you notice a rolling, open field of tall emerald grass. Bending, shimmering its slender fingers through the steady breeze. “Look at that amazing field over there. Isn’t that an amazing picture?” The image is acknowledged and then is out of view and mind, lost to everything that’s ahead. And did you happen to think about or notice “one single blade” in that luminous field; that one, combined with the many ones gathered into that wonderful whole picture? The art and intentionality of the one emerald scratch of light on the landscape? A moment of ( ).
There are many parentheses inserted for emphasis happening right now all around you. Less. Slower. Naturally. More.

The verse comes to mind - Be Still . . . and Know that I am God. In the busyness of rushing around - and DOING - we have got out of the habit of just being still - and especially being still before God. Sit down now - just try even 5 minutes of being still. Even when you empty your mind of thoughts - see how many rush in to take their place. Oops, there comes another one. Off you go you renegade. Settle down now, this is getting better - but I'm still thinking, not focusing on God. God is Good, God is Good, God is Good - saying it over and over again casts out other thoughts. Every time a thought pops its little head over the parapet, cast it out with God is Good.
ReplyDeleteSo what am I saying with this? God said Be Still and Know I am God. He didn't say be still and you MIGHT now I am God. He assures us that when we are still we will KNOW Him. His very being will fill our certainty and our knowledge, and we will just Be alongside God.
Try it again now in the knowledge of the certainty of God's promise that you will know He is God.
Take that thought with you into the busyness of the day. Learn how to cast your thoughts away and focus back on God, no matter where you are or what you are doing. Make space for God and you WILL know Him and He will bless you.
So where is this in the () of life? We are in the () which God has created for us, and we are God's creation. God is with us in the () and they are also protecting us from outside. Know the parentheses - and get used to being inside them with God. That is where He wants you to be still, with Him, whilst the () keep out whatever else might be going on in your lives. They are HIS (). Next time you need the closeness of God - go inside your () and feel safe.
Be still and know that He is God.
I think of the joy of God's delight in each of His children. He totally saves us but He also delights in us. (Zephaniah 3:17) It's hard to experience delight fast. To really savor it you need to stop, purposely set aside everything else and revel in it. A ( ) moment, an ahhh, you are so good God. Rejoice...the God of eternity and all creation delights in you.
ReplyDeleteWow...thanks Cher and Kate! I was wondering which, if any post would garner a response. I could not be more moved and disarmed from your responses. Not knowing how people will respond to my "messy-ness" I am learning more and more to just put it out there, be still and let God be God in the ink of others.
ReplyDeleteI was speaking with a friend, successful (not sure what that means, really) pastor and author who gave me the following input when I asked him about feedback about the direction of my next book: when you are writing from a God calling you are writing because you have to. If you are writing to make a lot of money that is not the reason or the way to evaluate the content or approach. He said basically that you write what is on your heart from God, put it out there and leave the details in His hands. Besides, the VAST majority of books sell under 5000 copies. That all said, I wrote my first book and have never sold a copy OR even printed one yet. Maybe I should be a little more intentional?
Be still. Praise God for giving us discovered joy in every moment. Still.
GIGATT (GOD IS GOOD all the time.
